More Paris

We visited the Musée d’Orsay, home of the Impressionist paintings.

Although the museum is very difficult to get through (the stairs and passageways seem deliberately concealed, and there is no way to see the galleries without extensive backtracking), the paintings are superb. This one, for example; I’d no idea how striking it truly is until I saw the original:

A reproduction of this painting hung over Danby’s bed when she was a girl:

On Wednesday we went to Versailles. After experiencing palace overload in St Petersburg, I didn’t care about going to Versailles, and perhaps that’s why I didn’t enjoy it. I’ll take Stockholm, with its museum celebrating the folkways of the common people, over such monuments to despotism as Versailles.

This is the Hall of Mirrors.

And here are a few miscellaneous shots of Paris. The first one is an original can-can dance hall. The last is the Metro stop just a few steps from our hotel.
